Bilirubin is the breakdown of hemoglobin in the blood. Elevated levels can indicate liver disease, such as cirrhosis or hepatitis. Bile duct blockage is another cause, usually from gallstones, or pancreatic tumors or stones.

Elevated bilirubin MAY indicate liver damage. In adults, in the absence of other clinical or laboratory findings, high bilirubin is often insignificant. Discuss the results with your PCP.
