That he's been having doubts about the relationship and feels he needs time to sort them out. If he hasn't been honest with you about these issues then there's a good chance this will end up being an important juncture in your relationship.

It means that your social ties need to be looked at indirectly. Most relationships are part of a larger group. Ask his best friends' girlfriend about him, if you don't know his best friends' girlfriends, you may already be an ex girlfriend, asking for a break was a final step.
