If somebody has a PhD in their title that generally means they've earned a doctorate of philosophy from an accredited university. Technically that said person could be referred to as "Dr. ______", although this could cause confusion as medical doctors have the same title.

A PhD is a doctoral degree, formally called a Doctor of Philosophy. Earning a PhD requires several classes and a doctoral thesis. This may require one to two years of study and research. It is the highest educational certification across all disciplines and areas of study, with the associates, bachelors, and masters degrees being the lower certifications.

Ph.D. means "Doctor of Philosophy." It's the degree people get after the master's degree. It means you are highly educated and people can call you Dr.

This means you have completed a doctorate in a specific area of learning, usually over the course of many years in an arduous academic environment. Someone can be a medical doctor or a doctor of philosophy, literature, theology, etc.
