"Khalifa" is indeed Arabic. It is the root of the English word "caliphate," which means a Muslim state or empire. It means a subordinate officer to a Sufi sheikh or ruler.

The Khalifa, sometimes written in English as Caliph, was the ruler of the Islamic empire (or 'Caliphate')from the Middle Ages up to modern times. One of the most famous Caliphs was Harun Al-Rashid, who appears in '1001 Arabian Nights'.

Khalifa is an Arabic word. It is actually an Arab family name that dates back for a long time. There is a Khalifa Dynasty that comes from the Arab country of Bahrain. They are actually the descendents of the Bani Utub tribe. So I don't believe Khalifa actually means anything. It is just a family name.
