Soul food is an all encompassing term refering to southern style food like chicken, mashed potatoes and rice. Large amounts of butter and cream are usually involved. It is not on a menu because it is traditionally cooked in homes for dinner.

"Soul Food" is basically home cooked southern food. They call it soul food because it's very rich and hearty. It's also very filling and can be high in flavor and fat. Some say it talks to your soul.
