First, you should be eligible for his retirement benefits or social security benefits. Find out if he had life insurance, either through work or through your insurer. Talk to your insurance agent - there may be life insurance, credit card insurance, or other policies in his name to which you have a right as his wife.

A lot depends on your age and abilities. Go immediately to your town or city welfare department and ask them where to go and who to see for help.

If you were married for at least 10 years and are 59 or older, you can apply for widow's benefits from Social Security. You can apply for emergency food stamps and housing assistance. If your husband had life insurance or an accidental life policy, you may be the beneficiary.

You should Apply for Social Security Death Benefits right away. You can also apply for cash assistance and food stamps to tide you over until you can figure out what you are going to do. Many Charitys in your area can also offer financial assistance and counseling.

While this would be a terrible situation, there are options available to you. You can get social security. This will provide you with a small income. The most important thing is to sort this out before it happens. Maybe you should get some training or take a class to better yourself.

Find out if he had a life insurance policy through work. Call your insurance agent and ask if there were any other insurance policies like whole life. They are yours.

The United Way is a great place to start. They have a network of resources and can point you to the right direction based on your individual situation and location. You probably also qualify for government situation while you get back on your feet. Contacting local churches can also be a great help.
