The CD rom drive is the device in a computer where a CD may be inserted to be read. This device is usually a tray where a CD can be placed. The CD is then scanned inside the computer and the program on it begins to run. The CD rom drive controls allows insertion and ejection of CDs.

CD-ROM stands for Compact Disk Read Only Memory. CD-ROM drives are disk drives capable of reading information from a compact disk, such as a music disk.

In addition to what others have said, it's important to note that if a drive is labeled "CD ROM" then it can't write (burn) disks, and it can't read DVDs - it can just read CDs. If a box of software says it requires a CD-ROM drive, that just means it comes on a CD and you can read it with any type of normal optical drive (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-writer, Blu-ray, etc.)

A CD ROM drive is the drive you put CDs (and DVDs normally) into in your PC. Typically it's a long rectangular strip on the front, with an eject button.
