To be co-dependent means that you do not have a good sense of self and are dependent on other peoples' view of you for your self-esteem. Another trait includes not dealing with reality as it is but as you would like it to be. Co-dependents view life in terms of black and white, with no shades of grey.

A co-dependent person usually has difficulties being independent in one or more areas of their life. Some co-dependent people are dependent on other people, but co-dependency can also mean someone is dependent upon substances, drugs, or other objects. There are different types and levels of co-dependency, but the underlying theme is always the inability to act or think independently.

A co-dependent person is someone who is overly controlling, overly involved in the issues of another and may attempt to rescue others in need. The personality often develops in those who were abused as children, or who come from a home with a substance-abusing parent. Co-dependents often derive their feelings of self-worth from how much others need them.

A codependent person takes care of a person who is in trouble like an alcoholic and makes excuses for him/her to the point that the alcoholic doesn't seek treatment.
