Dairy products cause mucus to build up on the epiglottis, the flap that covers the vocal cords when you swallow. Soda, coffee, and black tea cause dehydration of the tissues. The best remedy is warm water, it removes the mucus build up and hydrates the tissues.

You would want to avoid any foods that produce phlegm or mucus, such as dairy. Some also say avoid barley. Avoid foods that cause acid-reflux such as hot/spicy dishes.

It is healthy to put eucalyptus oil into boiling water and to inhale the vapors. It is good for your vocal chords to eat eggs, and licorice. You can also gargle baking soda or salt water. You should avoid food that causes flehm. Stay away from hot and spicy foods.

Water, first and foremost. I'm not kidding. Much as I hate to say it, stay away from caffeine, coffee, soda and chocolate because it tightens the throat. Hope that helps.
