Your best bet is interlocking foam panels that can be cut to cover an area. These will provide a safe environment for various activities and they come in many different sizes and colors. Various sites carry them online as well. There is also rubber mats that can be rolled out. (Gym padding)

There are manufacturers of rubber flooring for exactly this application. Hard wood is good if you want a "dance studio type of space. Would has a slight trampoline effect. If you are putting a lot of weight lifting equipment, I would put an exercise room over a slab with a rubberized flooring sealed against moisture.

Flooring for an exercise room is an individual decision. Some like hardwood since it is easy to keep clean, but it can be slippery and doesn't provide any cushioning for your feet. A carpet or thick vinyl surface provides more cushion.

If it were me, I would use a very soft carpet. Many would disagree, but I would rather have cushion on my feet than a hard floor.

The best type of floor that i would have would be marble. the marble type floor will let you put anything on it and it can take a lot of abuse.
