Originally, I truly believe that 'redneck' comes from white men that worked in the sun all day long and eventually had a red neck. Now, it's just a slang word that refers to a cowboy type of person. Any white person that grew up in a small town is a hillbilly, or a hick, or a redneck.

An original definition of a redneck is a person who works outside in the sun, bent over and sunburned on his/her neck from doing manual labor. Current definition shows that a redneck is a person who is not sophisticated, but is honest.

A redneck is someone who is raised up on a farm, or in the country. A redneck is someone who considers the local shell station fine dining on a Friday night. Also, a redneck always uses a chain hanging from their jeans for their keys instead of a key chain.

It is now an insulting term, usually referring politics but it comes from farmers who are completely covered, working in the sun, except for their necks. It looks very funny.

A redneck is about the same as a hick: an uneducated and closed-minded person, probably from the rural south. It comes from a time when short hair was unfashionable.
