A whale tail is a slang description for some clothing. It actually is the "y" shape that you see of a g-string or thong above a waistband.

The phrase "whale tail" has to do with what occurs when a person wears thong underwear and the pants worn over the underwear are not adequate to cover them. The resulting underwear exposure is shaped like the fluke, or tail, of a whale, and thus the term "whale tail" was coined.
