What is alum in powder?

I need to know more about the ingredient alum.

Usually alum powder is hydrated aluminium potassium sulfate. As an ingredient (i. e. , in cooking) it can be used in pickling recipes as a preservative to maintain fruits and vegetables crispy. Alum powder is also used as the acidic component of some commercial baking powders. Other uses include: flame retardant to treat clothes and chemical flocculant to clarify water.

Alum is commonly found as potassium aluminium sulfate used in food processing and also sodium aluminium sulfate which is an ingredient in baking powder.
