Backup storage is a separate piece of hardware that stores your important files in a different place than your hard drive. On personal computers it is often an external hard drive

A computer storage device whose capacity is larger, but whose access time is slower, than that of the computer's main storage or immediate access storage; usually slower than main storage. Also known as bulk storage. Backup tapes would be a classic example. While a harddrive takes milliseconds to reach any file it can take a tape minutes to do so.
