What is considered too much for holiday time lights?

I recommend staying with the basics - trees and shrubs in the front yard, on the home around trim only. More than that and you start edging towards excessive.

For inside or outside lights, don't trim everything in sight. For inside have lights on the Christmas tree and maybe trimming a banister or the mantle. For outside choose one large tree and minimal outline on a section of the house along with window lights.
