When an ionic salt such as sodium chloride dissolves in water, the ionic bonds are broken and each ion becomes attached to water molecules through hydrogen bonds. The energy released when the water molecules bond to the ions is called the hydration energy. Hydration energies are largest for small and highly charged ions.
