You can use a mix and just add alcohol and ice, but it will be sticky sweet. To make an authentic margarita, use the rule "3-2-1. " Three parts good tequila, two parts lime juice, one part triple sec. Shake and serve in a salt-rimmed glass on the rocks, or blend with ice.

There are many different recipes, but the most basic one is: A Tall Glass filled with ice, 1 3/4 ounces of your favorite tequila, 3/4 ounce of triple sec (Cointreau, Gran Marnier, etc), and 1/2 ounce of lime juice, fill with sour mix, and then shake it.
