Its a relatively simple procedure if your shower was installed correctly. Buy the replacement from a local hardware store, make sure to get some form of pipe putty. Then its a matter of unscrewing the old one and screwing on the new one.

If you just want to replace the knob with a matching kind, then its an easy job... but if you want to replace the entire valve, then you are probably going to have to rip out the wall including any wallcovering (ie tiles or shower lining).

First you need to turn off the water and purge the water lines. Take off the faucet handle by prying it off it broached system. Then remove the packing nut, inspecting the stem and washers of the faucet for wear. If it looks good then replace the valve and reassemble the faucet handle.

The valve is in the wall and attached to the stud. So for replacing it you have to tear the wall plus most of the time their is no access panel on the wall where the valve is located.

If its the shower knob itself, its a quick slide in slide out fix, if its the inner vaulve, you may have to shut the houses water off

The shower valve is easy. You are going to want to make sure the water is off inside the house and then you can take the valve off and install the new one.
