Symbolic interactionism is a term used within the fields of Urban Sociology and Social Psychology in particular to describe a major sociological perspective that places specific emphasis on social interaction which occurs on a micro-scale. Social interactionism is said to have origins in the philosophical movement known as American Pragmatism.

It is when people act a certain way towards something or someone, based on society's view of that item. You base the meaning of things that you see in a day to day basis off of what other people in society think of those items. That then forms your opinion on items or people.
