Fabric stores have a wide variety of novelty fabrics. The newest kind is what I call the "long pile micro fiber fabric". Absolutely soft!! You might even want to consider making a blanket for yourself. Otherwise, cotton flanelette is always a popular choice for baby garments.

Cotton would be the best, and flannel as long as you prewash it a few times. Stay away from polar fleece after a few washings it pills and can irritate.

I would make one out of some kind of cotton. That way it won't be too warm or to cold. That is very nice of you to want to make your friend's kid a blanket.

Why don't you use yarn and knit or crochet one. It is easier than you think and very enjoyable for a new mother to receive a soft baby blanket. It also washes well if you don't use wool.

I would probably use cotton. It is soft and can be warm, but can also breathe really well in the summer time.
