For a new lawn you will need a fertilizer that is high in phosphorus. A bag of fertilizer contains an NPK sequence. That represents the Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium content. A safe bet would be to use Miracle Grow all purpose fertilizer. This contains and a good amount of all three.

You can use any kind of fertilizer that is meant for the summer. The best and the easiest to use is any thing by Scotts, and also if you get it in a spray form. This is much easier then breaking your back with the granules and spreading them across your lawn.

On any bag of fertilizer you will find three numbers which refer to the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus [P205], and potassium [K20] in the fertilizer. Nitrogen is what greens up your lawn. Potassium an important role in strengthening the plants and forming carbohydrates.

Potash is a source of potassium and it plays an important role in strengthening the plants and forming carbohydrates. It hardly contributes to ground water pollution however if there are erosion issues it will move with the soil particles.
