Often crate training works to teach the dog to go only outside. But you can teach a dog to ring a bell hung off the doorknob that works for many.

Be consistent with your dachshund. Be firm but patient. Dachshunds are smart, but can be stubborn. Keep track of your dachshund's pottying times for a couple of days, then take him out just before that time each day. Tell him, "Go Potty! " Praise him when he goes. If he starts to potty indoors say, "NO! " then take him outside immediately.

Start your Dachshund with crate training. Take him out frequently to go outside and restrict the time spent out of the crate. He will learn not to go in his crate and than can be given more freedom in the house, supervised freedom until he is fully housebroken. Make sure to praise acceptable behavior generously and criticize mistakes verbally.

You housebreak a Dachshund the same way as any other dog. I would recommend confining your dog to a crate when not directly observed and taking him outside immediately after removing him from the crate. Also, 30 minutes after he eats or drinks, you should take him outside.

As with any animal, teaching them housebreaking mean letting them out all of the time. It is important for them to know that it is not tolerated to go to the bathroom in the house. Controlling water intake is also very important.
