You can purchase shingles exclusively for low sloping roofs. I would also use ice shield, and not just on the edges of the roof. This will also help with snow build up and melting. Flashing should be used along the connection to the main structure, over top of the ice shield, and under the siding.

The common material for a low slope roof is shingles. But today there are many options. Slate is the longest lasting of the options. Followed by a copper roof, then fake slate, and then shingles.

The best roofing materials resist precipitation, sunlight/UV, and wind. Your options are: rot-resistant woods (cedar shakes), rust-resistant metals, spanish-tiles, sunlight-resistant plastics. Depending on your rain/snow/wind loading, I'd pick corrogated metal/plastic/tile.

I believe the best material is to buy shingles that are made exclusively for this purpose. You can also use other materials such as ice shields which also protect the low slope roof.

If the slope is below a 4/12 you will probably wnat rolled roofing. Anything 4/12 or above you can use shingles jsut as effectively.
