It depends on the tree you are cutting, and if you mean taking them down or pruning. Chainsaws work well for all trees, but can be hard to use.

Use a chainsaw. It is a quick and effective tool. Pole chainsaws are the best tool to use if you only need to cut limbs from a tree.

Hand pruners are good for the small branches, sucker growth, etc. Loppers work for most branches that are one to three inches. Any thing bigger you will need a chain saw. Whatever you use make sure it is as sharp as possible. You do not want to tear the bark.

For a tree larger than an inch in diameter, a chainsaw is best. For smaller trees, loppers will work just fine. Please follow all safety precautions when you use a chainsaw.

You can use a handsaw or a chainsaw, it depends on how large and thick the tree is and if you can handle which better. With a handsaw more manpower is required but it is safer because you have more control, with a chainsaw you need more steadiness.
