What is the best way to remove hard water stains from a toilet bowl?

I don't want to use anything that will scratch the bowl.

Pouring bleach into the water and closing the lid, letting it sit for 24hours breaks down the nastiness and then allows an easier scrub with just a normal toilet brush.

I found that using a pumice stone, while usually recommended, is not as effective as taking a screw driver and gently chipping off the lime scale. First flush the bowl and immediately turn off the water intake. This was you can see the area clearly. Slowly and gently chip them off.

I would try Lime Away or something like that. That is what it is designed for, in the first place. That wouldn't scratch it. Also you could maybe even try putting a little bleach on it.

Shut the water supply to your toilet.Flush it until it is empty.Get some paper towels, soak them good with a bathroom cleaner(citrus if possible)vinegar will do too.Put the in the bowl and cover up all the stains.Let is sit there for several hours and re-apply the cleaner or vinegar as it dries.Gently remove residuals with a toilet brush.
