Your body needs energy for its daily upkeep. That energy comes mostly from carbohydrates and fat. Depending on your activity, your body needs a certain amount of food to extract the energy from. If you eat more than that, the body stores this excess energy as fat, resulting in weight gain. To loose weight, either eat less (diet) or exercise.

The energy we receive from the food we eat is based on what we eat. Not all foods have the same amount of energy. It depends on the chemical make up of the food. Foods that contain lots of sugar, protein or fat will have the most amount of energy.
