The medical cause of anxiety is unknown or why some people suffer while others don't. It's estimated that 1 in 3 Americans will have at least one anxiety attack in their lives. As a symptom, anxiety can be a part of many disorders/diseases including hyperthyroidism, depression, lupus, and diabetes.

There are actually many causes of anxiety and panic attacks. It could range from hormones, the body's individual chemical make up, to something as simple as stress. Anybody can have an anxiety attack, and having one does not mean that you will have them regularly like some people do. It's completely dependent on the individual.

Anxiety attacks are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. This imbalance could be a result of a number of factors, internal and/or external. Internally, someone could be predisposed to having anxiety attacks based on genetics. Or, a deficiency in certain vitamins and nutrients could be the cause. Externally, a large amount of stress could cause anxiety attacks.

Anxiety attacks happen from being fearful of something or from things that might have happened in your past. If you got trapped in a locked room when you were younger, for the rest of your life you could be fearful of getting trapped in rooms, and if it ever seems like it might happen, it will cause you to panic.
