There are several types of herpes caused by different strains of viruses. Genital herpes are caused by a strain of the herpes simplex virus, and may be passed through sexual contact and the exchange of bodily fluids. Oral herpes, or cold sores, are caused by a different strain of the herpes simplex virus and are not caused by sexual contact.

Herpes is caused by a virus, HSV-1 and HSV-2 are the most prevalent types. HSV-1 is typically responsible for cold sores around the mouth and nose while HSV-2 typically causes what is known as genital herpes. They are the same general disease, however, and it is possible to have outbreaks in either area of the body regardless of which strain.
