A wain is a two- or four-wheeled, horse-drawn vehicle that is used to haul things, especially as it pertains to farming. A two-wheeled haywain is a good example. People are not transported in wains. The ropes used to secure the load on a wain are referred to as wain ropes.

A term not in common usage currently, wain-ropes are ropes or cords for securing loads on wagons. The word "wain" means wagon in several scandinavian languages. A synonym for wain-rope is cart-rope.
