Ascorbic acid has the molecular formula C6H8O6, meaning the compound contains 6 atoms of Carbon, 8 atoms of Hydrogen, and 6 atoms of Oxygen. Under the IUPAC system, it is called (5R)-[(1S)-1,2-dihydroxyethyl]-3,4-dihydroxyfuran-2(5H)-one .
