The balanced equation of photosynthesis shows how carbon dioxide and water are turned into glucose molecules : 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy = C6H12O6 + 6O2. Free oxygen molecules are also released as the result of the reaction.

The overall equation is: 6CO2 + 6H2O <==> C6H12O6 + 9O2. In addition to carbon dioxide and water being required, sunlight and chlorophyll are also required. The arrows are written both ways, since this equation is reversible. The reverse of this equation is cellular respiration. It occurs in our bodies.
