In ancient Greece and Rome, money usually was given to winners instead of trophies on occasions such as Olympics. Later the winner also received an amphora (vase-shaped ceramic container ).
The word comes from the Latin "tropaion," which is arms, spoils or human captives gained in war. Today a trophy is a symbol of the "battle" won by the victor.
