Wreaths were worn on the head as a sign of status in the era known as Ancient Rome, for example a laural wreath was placed on the head of a returning commander during his "triumph" while he paraded through the streets. They are commonly worn nowadays as part of other traditions in other countries.

The custom of crafting hair wreaths became popular during the Victorian era. The hair was usually that of deceased family members and was used in an artistic way to form a sort of memorial. The wreaths were then added to when other family members died.

Hair wreaths are Victorian era memorials made into flowers. The hair flowers are woven or sewn into a horseshoe shaped wreath with the top part open and ascending heavenward.
