The pre-8th century word was "buturfliog" which was "butter" and "fly." It is believed the butter reference came from the yellow color on the butterfly's wings.

It is thought that the term "butterfly" comes from the idea that insects would hover around or steal milk and butter that was left uncovered. There are also theories that the name has to do with the excrement of the butterfly, which resembles butter.
