The saxaphone was invented in the 1940's by Adolphe Sax. The first Sax was simple and could only play good Lagato. Though Adolphe had a patent developers over the years added new keys and abilities.

The saxophone was invented by a Belgian instrument maker called Antoine-Joseph Sax, better known as Adolphe Sax. He first patented the saxophone 17th May 1846. He also invented Saxhorns, valved instruments used in brass bands, the forerunners of the modern marching band instruments. Look up Adolphe Sax on Wikipedia. Also, Google for Sousaphone.
