The very first Super Bowl was played in 1967 and was played immediately following the normal NFL season. The Super Bowl concept was originally known as the "AFL-NFL World Championship Game." This agreement between the NFL and the AFL resulted in what we know currently know as the Super Bowl.

Lamar Hunt then owner of the Kansas City Chiefs merged the AFL and NFL together and created the Super Bowl which was given to the winner of the season (and playoffs). Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers won the first even Super Bowl, and won it again last year over Pittsburgh.

The first "Super Bowl" was actually a championship game between two football leagues, the AFL and the NFL. It was later renamed "Super Bowl I" and the two leagues merged.

The Super Bowl began in 1967 to determine which of the football leagues, the NFL or the AFL, was really the top league. In 1970 the AFL joined the NFL.
