Answer by  canadabee (932)

Although the literacy rate in America is listed in most places as somewhere between 95-98%, this number can be misleading. Those who work in education, especially in reading and writing classes at the high school or even college level, often find low literacy even in fairly advanced classes.

According to the CIA World Factbook (considered to be an authoritative source on statistics for countries around the world), the literacy rate in the United States is 99% (literacy is defined as the percentage of people over the age of 15 who can read and write). The literacy rate is 99% for both males and females.

In 2006, 65% of America could read and write. The remaining percentage was said to never have picked up another book without leaving school, which results in illiteracy.
