The Hawaiian ukulele was based on the machete which was introduced by Portuguese immigrants. It was popular in the 1920s, in the post war era, and has had a recent resurgence in popularity. Arthur Godfrey played the ukulele, and Tiny Tim famously played Tiptoe Thru the Tulips on the uke. George Harrison also played the ukulele.

The Ukulele is an attempt to recreate a stringed instrument brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants. It was developed in the 1880s. King David Kalakaua, a devoted patron of the arts, was instrumental in building the ukulele's popularity in Hawaii by incorporating its music into performances at royal gatherings. The ukulele's popularity didn't spread internationally until the 20th Century.
