A small tree, it produces beautiful magenta-pink flowers in spring. They do not like to be transplanted and thrive with lots of sun. Spring dormant planting is best. If you start with seed, begin outside in ground or pots. When stems are multiple on trunk, trim all but center stem and it will resemble a tree more.

Redbuds are hardy in zones 5-8 and actually require a little cold weather to encourage budding. They can handle partial shade but prefer sun. Plant in well drained soil.

Redbuds love the sun and can handle a little shade. It does not do that great in hot climate. It will need occasional pruning for the wild branches it grows.
