It is generally acceptable to tip slightly less at a buffet, since patrons of a buffet serve themselves and require minimal effort and attention from the waitstaff. Since 15% is the standard, 10% is acceptable at buffets.

Standard tipping rates are 10 percent to 20 percent. I hate having to tip buffet servers, but it is the right thing to do. Usually 10 percent is adequate. They do bring drinks, and have to clean up after you. Think of how you would want to be tipped.

At a buffet, the server's primary job is serving drinks and cleaning up plates. They may bring extra silverware and napkins. If they have done a discrete job of taking extra plates and keeping drinks full, 15% is correct. If they did nothing but show you to a table, no tip is needed.

These servers as still paid the minimum waiting wage which is generally around two dollars depending on the state in which they are in. Therefore the same tipping percentages of 10-15 percent apply. Many people under tip these servers even though they clean up and do many other things in the restaurant.

A proper tip would be 20% of the bill. Servers make their money on tips and usually have to tip out the bus boys.
