But is a conjunction or preposition. If a conjunction, it means "oppositely" and should start its clause. If a preposition, it means "except" and should go before its object.

You use the word "but", just as you use the word "however", to indicate contradiction. You make a statement, then use "but" before contradicting what was said before.

Both the formal and informal English the word "but" having many uses,but many of this using this when we give up feed back or criticizing,this word is mostly used for good,somber,reluctant praise and stern news. this is a contradictory word. some of the usage of this words cause defensive,fail to offer motivation,fail to offer encouragements using in this way is good one.
