Violin's should be maintained as long as they are in use which involves keeping pegs lubricated, replacing strings as necessary, keeping the finish pristine and fine and attending to any broken or worn accessories.

Protect it by always putting it in a latched case when not playing. Loosen your bow hair when you are done playing. Keep the instrument clean by wiping it with a dry cloth. Learn how to make sure the bridge is not tilting. Learn how to change strings.

Keep it in controlled temperatures. Too hot or too cold can risk splitting the wood. You'll also want to make sure you wipe the rosin off the wood after you play each time. This will keep the varnish cleaner. If you live in a very dry area, consider getting dampits to keep the wood from getting too dry.

To properly maintain your violin, be sure to keep it in a temperature controlled environment. Also, get a high quality, clean dust cloth and wipe it off under the strings after each use to prevent a build up of rosin. Be sure to store it in its case to keep it safe.
