Americans cut meat with the fork in the left hand, then switch it to the right hand, stab the meat and eat it, tines up. Europeans don't switch hands and keep the fork in the left hand throughout the meal. Tines curve downward unless eating foods that are scooped.

First lay the fork so it's resting between your pointer and middle finger. Once it's there rest your thumb also on the top, but lower down. When using a fork, cut down your food to proper sizes so you don't have a huge mouthful of food. And like always, don't talk with your mouth open!

Cut the food with your knife into manageable pieces, and then spear it with your tines on your fork. Keep your elbows off the table, and if you really want to follow things to the letter, you can put your fork down between bites. You don't have to cut things like a salad, just remember to use the proper fork.

There are so many different etiquette rules about eating with a fork it hard to know which rule you are talking about. You should of course not fist your fork but hold it properly between your thumb and index fingers. When eating pasta the fork should be twirled in a spoonful of pasta to gather pasta around it.
