This medicine is safer for younger dogs as they can develop tolerance, but it's not the best option for older dogs. Phenobarbital have side effects and drug interaction that must be counted for, especially in older dogs, as it can cause lethargy, can affects dog's activity and metabolism gaining weight easily.

Phenabarbitol is used to treat seizures. In older dogs with preexisting conditions like orthopedic problems, it may cause weakness. The decision on whether to use this drug with an older dog is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

While not as safe as benzodiazepines, if it's prescribed by a vet it should be safe. The only real problem would be if your dog had liver or kidney failure.

Phenabarbitol is used to help prevent seizures in dogs. This medicine is safe for older dogs as it is effective, easy to use, comes in pill or liquid form and also inexpensive. I t works effectively in 60 to 80 percent in the animals. It takes 1 to 2 weeks to get right in the system to take proper effect.
