Shih Tzus are bright and happy dogs. They have a stubborn streak, and are hard to potty train. They are good with children, and love to play. Because of their flat faces, they have respiratory issues. They need constant grooming when their coat is left long, but many owners cut their dog's coat short into a "teddy bear" cut.

Shi Tzus have long coats requiring daily grooming with a bristle brush. Their common ailments include slipped stifle and spinal disc disease, eye problems, ear infections, and early tooth loss. Because of their small size, they are not recommended, especially when puppies, for families with young children though families with older, considerate children may be fine.

Short tempered and moody. They are not particularly good with anyone but their owner. Children are better served with a more good-tempered breed, as can be found with shepperds.

Shih tzus are good with older children, but are small so younger children can hurt them easily. They require regular grooming. They are prone to slip disc and snoring.

Shi tzu's can be wonderful pets, and are good with children, especially ones that they have known a while. They do tend to have skin problems such as minor allergies.

In general, Shih Tzu are happy friendly little dogs. They require a lot of grooming at home and by a professional regularly too. Problems include bad knees, spinal issues, dental issues, trachea problems and the eyes are easily injured. They can easily overheat due to their short noses.
