Generally for rib fractures the only treatment is pain management. Rib fractures are quite painful. Also taking deep breaths frequently will help prevent pulmonary complications.

You will need at least 6-8 weeks to heal with minimal movement to avoid extending the injury. Your physician may tape your ribs to impede movement and increase your comfort and prescribe NSAIDS to decrease inflammation and give pain relief. Some sports chiropractors have found electrical stimulation efficacious to healing.

Chest x-ray is necessary to determine the possible displacement of a fractured rib. Previously, a "rib belt" was used to stabilize this type of fracture of a rib. More recently cautious observation, pain relief and activity restriction are considered more effective and less likely to cause puncture of the lung.

Sleep sitting upright, say ouch and ooooh alot, be happy they found the break with xray's and will give plenty of pain pill's because time is what it takes to heal.
