What lies under your skin are nerves which send touch impulses to the motor sensory part of the brain which delivers a signal that we interpret as pain. Nerves are present throughout ones body accept in the brain itself. Nerves provide basic motor functions and feeling in the human body.

If there is a sore on the surface of the skin and the skin hurt underneath that, you might have shingles, which is contagious and should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible. This hurt is much like a black and blue feeling only under your skin. After the sore is crusted you are not contagious anymore.

There could be an infection or a bruise present. If you are a weight lifter, a strenuous workout will result in lactic acid in your muscles that may lead to discomfort. If the skin is red or appears inflamed and the pain persists, it's best to see a physician and have it checked.

There could be possible nerve damage. A muscular problem may be the cause badly strained ligaments which are very painful to touch. Sometimes veins get clogged and this can be painful if the blood flow is not running smoothly, not always a varicose vein you cannot see it with the naked eye.
