A lurcher is a crossbreed dog created by breeding a greyhound to any other breed, usually a collie or a herding dog, or a terrier. They were used for hunting and poaching rabbits, and were developed for intelligence and speed. It is said Queen Elizabeth the first banned commoners from owning greyhounds and so the crossbreed was developed.

A lurcher is a cross breed with some greyhound or deerhound in it. They can have long hair or short hair and are traditionally popular with gypsies and poachers.

A Lurcher is not a purebreed dog, so it would probably not be listed on the AKC site. It's a mixed-breed dog, with one breed being of the greyhound line.

It is a breed the thrusts its body forward as a means of intimidation and/ or play. Hence the name given to it, based on "lerch".
