You need a heavy duty sewing machine to sew denim. You will need the proper size needle to sew heavy materials. The machine should have adjustable stitch lengths. The stitches for denim should be longer than the ones used for lightweight materials. The foot feed should be heavier for denim.

You can use a standard sewing machine however you will need a thicker needle. I would recommend a size 90/14. If those break then you may have to move up to a more professional type machine such as a computerized one or a serger. Both tend to handle thicker materials better.

What you need to sew denim is an older, metal, good quality machine. These machines have metal gears that can go through denim, much better that today's plastic machines. Also use a number 16 or 18 jeans needle, they have a sharp point to go through denim. Look for machines at second hand shops or tag sales.

The machine may not be the issue. First, change your needle to a specific "jeanss needle". Also, reduce the tension on the front of the machine.
