Generally, two types are played. Either songs of mourning that help the attendees grieve and move on, or else songs that were beloved by the person the funeral is in honor of, in order to celebrate their life and the music they enjoyed.

Traditionally, the type of music played at a funeral is referred to as a "dirge. " In more modern times, many different varieties are used. Most often, the person being buried will have stated some preference in his or her will or may have told a friend in life what he or she wanted.

Hymns and Spirituals are traditional for funerals but music enjoyed by the deceased is certainly appropriate, spiritual or not. Both live and recorded music is commonly used.
